50th USS Grayling Memorial Service Brings Navy Tradition and Living History to Sloan’s Lake on Sept. 12

The service will combine remembrance with unusually vivid sights and sounds: two 15-foot scale submarines — one diesel and one nuclear, Navy dress uniforms, the piercing call of a submarine klaxon, presentation of the colors, dignitaries being piped aboard, the Tolling of the Boats, a rifle salute, Taps, flag folding and the Honor Bell ceremony.

A dozen retired submariners are expected and will wear identifying vests so attendees can find them easily. Their experience includes service involving ballistic missiles and nuclear-reactor operations. Lieutenant Seth Brannan, who served aboard the USS Colorado for two years, is also scheduled to participate.
