Grocery prices are still squeezing shoppers, so Chron tested a simple question: Where can Houstonians get the cheapest basic basket?
Chron bought three staples Wednesday from five major grocery stores: ground beef, milk and white bread. The goal was to compare the same kind of everyday items at Aldi, Walmart, Kroger, H-E-B and Joe V’s Smart Shop while prioritizing recognizable staples when possible, including Borden milk, Mrs Baird’s bread and 80/20 ground beef.
Aldi had the cheapest checkout in Chron’s five-store grocery test, but Joe V’s made the value question a little more complicated…
