Mass. AG Bars Debt Buyer Over Vehicle Seizures

Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell announced yesterday a consent judgment permanently barring a debt buying and collection operation from doing business in the state, resolving a lawsuit that accused the companies of seizing consumers’ vehicles to pressure them into paying.

The final judgment, signed earlier this month covers Champion Funding, Inc., Champion Funding, LLC, Judgment Acquisitions Unlimited, Inc., and owner Andrew Metcalf.

According to an accounting Metcalf provided to the state in July, the companies held approximately 7,322 debts with a stated balance of $58.9 million. Of those, about 6,479 debts totaling $52.8 million were owed by Massachusetts consumers…
