To walk or ride a bike in Tampa Bay is a gamble.
Last summer, Florida Phoenix reported on a new Smart Growth America and the National Complete Streets Coalition study that ranks the Bay area as the eighth most dangerous metro area in the country and the most dangerous in Florida (there were 516 pedestrian fatalities in the Tampa-St. Pete-Clearwater area between 2008-2024, according to the study’s interactive map). What’s more is that people of color and low-income communities continue to be killed at disproportionate rates, according to the study.
