New brain health rooms aim to help Ankeny students with mental health challenges

ANKENY, Iowa – A new space at two Ankeny middle schools has been created to give students a place to reset and work through mental health challenges.

The space is called the Brain Health Retreat Room. It allows students to take a 15 minute break if they’re feeling overwhelmed or overstimulated.

In the room, you’ll find couches, “hug chairs” that reduce noise and allow for a bit of privacy, and spaces to color or play with fidgets. There are snacks in the room too.
