RIO RANCHO — The sound of handcrafted drums filled the gymnasium of Rio Rancho High School on Saturday afternoon, ushering in a procession of young and old Native Americans for the 18th annual Powwow hosted by Rio Rancho Public Schools.
The event, which included vendors offering arts, crafts, and food, sought to showcase Native American culture and educate the community — with a dose of fun.
“The original intent for powwows is to gather and to celebrate and have fun together,” said Rami Beautiful Bald Eagle, the event’s Head Man, from South Dakota. “It’s become pan-Indian, so … it’s a good opportunity for different tribes to come together and share the same experience with American culture.”…
