Family says CYFD and Albuquerque police should’ve done more to protect kids from their mother

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – An Albuquerque family is speaking out on Tuesday night, after police say a mother sparked a fire in her apartment while her two kids were inside. The grandmother and family friend said they feared the kids were in danger, but CYFD and police did not act fast enough.

In February, police got a call about a fire at Yailasha Smith’s apartment. Police got Smith and her two kids safely out, but the grandmother of one of the kids says they called police days earlier, saying the mother was acting erratically.

Smoke was coming out of the door, and a fire was burning in the bathroom. Albuquerque police arrested 28-year-old Yailasha Smith, accused of putting her two children in danger, who were both lying on the bed as the fire burned. While on the scene, officers and firefighters said that they had a feeling something like this might happen, saying they had been called five times earlier that day…
