Piedmont Triad in extreme drought; high of 68 on Friday

PIEDMONT TRIAD, N.C. (WGHP) — The latest update on the Drought Monitor shows drought conditions have worsened over the past week. Most of the FOX8 viewing area is now in an Extreme Drought.

Mostly cloudy skies will greet you this morning with cool temperatures. By lunchtime, we’ll be able to enjoy partly cloudy skies and a cool, northeast breeze. Highs today only make it to the upper-60s.

Clouds return overnight as a coastal low starts its trek toward the Carolina beaches. The southern Piedmont may have some sprinkles early Saturday morning, but the chance of rain is only 20%. Lows remain mild, near 50 degrees.

During the day on Saturday, we will have cloudy skies and highs in the upper-50s.  Unfortunately, showers from the coastal low will be confined to the beaches, Coastal Plain, and Sandhills of North Carolina. In the Triad, measurable rain in the order of 0.01 of an inch is all we get, but up to 0.10 of an inch may be logged in Montgomery and Chatham Counties.

High pressure brings sunshine back on Sunday, and temperatures will bounce back into the mid-60s.

Next week starts with dry, warm weather. Highs on Monday continue to climb, reaching the mid-70s under partly cloudy skies. Sunshine really takes over on Tuesday, allowing highs to reach the lower-80s. Then an approaching cold front starts to kick up clouds on Wednesday, holding highs back to the upper-70s.

Wednesday night and Thursday morning offer the best chance for showers, at around 60%, as a cold front crosses the state. By afternoon, most of the showers will have ended and we’ll be able to enjoy partly cloudy skies. Highs will top out in the lower-70s…
