Detective details speakerphone confession in Sylvania woman’s killing

The man accused of beating his mother-in-law to death at her Sylvania home April 15 confessed to the crime in a phone call to his father shortly afterward, a Sylvania detective testified during a court hearing Friday morning.

The father had the call on speakerphone with police officers present when the alleged confession was made, the detective said.

Judge Michael Goulding ordered Jonathan Schmidt, 35, be held without bond following the hearing in Lucas County Common Pleas Court, during which detective Sgt. Justin Music said police also obtained surveillance video from a Lowe’s store on Central Avenue showing Schmidt purchasing three items, including crowbars, that were later found at the Fox Hollow Court home of victim Marcia Van Druten, 68…
