Albuquerque man who shot and killed gas station thief receives sentence

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A gas station employee got a life sentence in court on Monday for murdering a shoplifter he caught. Two years ago, then 37-year-old Stephen McCorkle shot and killed James Rendon, whom he caught shoplifting various items with another person.

McCorkle was working at the Shwan’s Gas Station at Lomas and Louisiana when he went to the bathroom, leaving the door to the station unlocked. When he returned, he saw the pair stealing lottery tickets, cash, cigarettes, and food from the store.

The thieves fled, but McCorkle chased the pair on foot and then in his car. Rendon was later found shot to death a few blocks away.

McCorkle was taken into custody and was booked on an open count of murder. Police say McCorkle has a prior record of felonies, including another attempted murder charge and child abuse…
