Cuban restaurant closing for good after a decade-long fight to open in the French Quarter

Habana Outpost, a Cuban and Mexican restaurant that transformed a long vacant edge of the French Quarter after years of community opposition, will close Wednesday after two years in business.

The restaurant opened in 2023 at the corner of North Rampart Street and Esplanade Avenue, serving Cuban sandwiches, street corn, tacos and margaritas from a once-blighted gas station reimagined as a vibrant, subtropical space.

Owner Sean Meenan said he is closing the restaurant to focus on family. He plans to continue operating his nonprofit, HavanaWorks, and to “contribute to the city that’s contributed so much to my family and me.”…
