No hazards found after chemical smell causes evacuation at Swanton High School

SWANTON, Ohio — Hazmat crews found no hazardous conditions at Swanton High School Wednesday afternoon after a chemical smell prompted an evacuation, according to the village’s fire chief.

The school building was also determined to be safe after first responders cleared the scene around 2:24 p.m., but all on-campus evening events were canceled out of caution.

The Swanton Fire and Rescue Division responded to the school around 12:14 p.m. after “an unusual odor had been detected in the chemistry lab while staff were cleaning scientific instruments,” fire Chief Cuyler Kepling said in a press release.
