Drier weather returns after Wednesday with warmer temperatures

Good afternoon!

Yesterday’s showers and storms brought beneficial rainfall to the Land of Enchantment. Rainfall totals stacked up to 0.11″ at the Albuquerque International Sunport and ranged from 0.13-.50″ in Cibola County. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), at least 0.47″ of rainfall accumulated at the Gallup Airport and 0.56″ near Mountainair. This afternoon the northern mountains are experiencing additional rain and snow showers after Tuesday’s wet conditions. At radar indicated snow showers were depicted along the peaks of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and light rain moving through Sandoval and Rio Arriba Counties. This afternoon and evening showers, storms and snow are forecasted to move through northern and northeast New Mexico before drier conditions are on tap for Thursday.

In addition to the wet Wednesday weather gusty winds will be around of northwest New Mexico and the east as a cold front slides through the state. Wind gusts will range from 30-40 mph in the northwest corner of the state and behind the front this evening, in eastern New Mexico, gusts could exceed 40 mph. This front will slide farther south into Texas by early tomorrow morning. Colder air will funnel into the Land of Enchantment behind the front contributing to frigid conditions tomorrow morning. The NWS will issue Freeze Warnings for sections of northwest, northwest, northern I-25 (from about Las Vegas to Raton) and Santa Fe for subfreezing temperatures.
