A well-known Metairie jeweler is behind bars after deputies say a string of customers lost close to $40,000 in sales and valuables they had turned over for appraisal or consignment. The allegations center on older clients and pricey pieces, including a Rolex and an antique gold pocket watch. Detectives say the investigation is still rolling as they hunt for missing property and try to untangle questionable payments.
Arrest And Allegations
Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office detectives arrested 71-year-old Ira Savoie of Old Jefferson on April 25. He was booked on four counts of felony theft between $5,000 and $24,999, two counts of bank fraud and one count of exploitation of the elderly.
According to investigators, one victim, a 61-year-old man, was told a diamond ring had sold for $10,500. A 74-year-old woman was informed that five gold coins had brought in $20,526. Another customer reported turning over a Rolex and a gold-nugget bracelet worth about $7,400. Deputies say they recovered a gold pocket watch at Savoie’s Causeway Boulevard business, and his bail was set at $85,000. The cases remain under investigation, per NOLA.com.
