ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) –Earning the program’s first win in the Mountain West Tournament since 2005, on Wednesday, UNM softball tried to make it two in a row, but was sidelined by top seed Grand Canyon 7-6 on Thursday.
In what started as a pitcher’s duel, GCU held a 1-0 lead over New Mexico until the top of the sixth inning when Gabriel Briones drove the ball to the wall in left center for an RBI double that cut the Lobos deficit to 2-1. A sacrifice fly from Atrisco Heritage product Melanie Macias knotted the game at 2 in the Lobos half of the inning.
By the top of the seventh inning, the Lobos found themselves in a good spot. Jessica DeLeon hit a grand slam to give UNM a 6-2 advantage. Any hopes of a Lobos upset were dashed in the bottom of the seventh inning when GCU scored five runs. Addison Shifflett finished the Lobos off with a walk-off RBI double to left-center field…
