Railroads facilitate employment for millions of Americans, including thousands of Ohioans who serve as the backbone of our agriculture, construction, and manufacturing industries. From corporate employees working in dispatching and logistics to yard workers and maintenance crews, those employed directly by our railroads work tirelessly to advance our economy, moving more than a billion tons of freight annually to national and international markets. As a 30-plus year railroader and lifetime resident of northwest Ohio, I feel obligated to express my concerns.
These positions are absolutely critical. They provide good-paying jobs and connect Ohio’s economy to the rest of the world. But too often, these workers are left vulnerable to railway consolidation.
