Former Horry County Schools board member dies, district announces

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — Former Horry County Schools board member Howard Barnard died after recently stepping down from his position due to health concerns, the school district said Monday.

Barnard was elected as the District 5 representative on the HCS Board of Education in November of 2020 before stepping down on April 1. He represented the southern part of the county, including Garden City and a portion of Surfside Beach.

“Mr. Barnard was a devoted public servant, deeply committed to enhancing Horry County Schools and his community,” the district said. “He tirelessly advocated for public education, and we will honor his life while expressing gratitude for his contributions and support of our students, their families, and our staff.”…
