Controversial Lavender Hill event space permit denied by Richmond City Council

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A controversial permit vote for an outdoor event space in Richmond was denied by city councilmembers Monday evening after the vote had previously been delayed seven times.

During its meeting on Monday, May 11, the Richmond City Council voted to approve a $3.4 billion budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year — which includes continued funding for the Flock camera system — and several related amendments. However, councilmembers voted to deny a controversial special use permit (SUP) for Lavender Hill, an outdoor event space located at 1705 Commonwealth Ave.

Small business owner Nadia Anderson and Sauer’s Garden neighbors have clashed over the venue for some time, leading to repeated delays in the permit vote, including a delay on Monday, April 13
