State troopers’ new turnpike tool is hard to miss

AMHERST, Ohio (WJW) – Members of the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Ohio Turnpike met with FOX 8 News at the Amherst service plaza along the toll road on Wednesday, May 13, to show off one of the patrol’s newest tools.

A semi-truck, which was seized during a drug arrest, was put to good use. First, it was used for education and recruitment. Since last year, it’s been repurposed to help catch speeders on Ohio’s highways. This year, it’s been deployed in construction zones on the Ohio Turnpike.

“We’re very grateful for the partnership with the patrol. It’s a real big attention-getter and should signal people when they see that coming through the zone. If they’re not already observing the speed limit, it’s time to slow it down,” said Brian Newbacher, public information officer for the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission.

He explained how this construction season there is a $270 million capital improvement fund being used to keep the highway in tip-top shape across 20 work zones…
