NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A Norfolk man accused of killing his wife and hiding her body in a freezer made his first court appearance for his local charges since being extradited back to the United States following an international manhunt.

David Varela appeared virtually from Western Tidewater Regional Jail as a Norfolk judge formally advised him of the charges connected to the death of his wife, Lina Guerra.
Investigators say Guerra was reported missing Feb. 5. The following day investigators discovered her body inside a freezer at the couple’s downtown Norfolk apartment.
