Audit finds over $1 million in El Paso hotel occupancy taxes missing across 20 properties

EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — An internal audit by the city of El Paso found widespread compliance issues among multiple hotels in El Paso and concluded that more than $1 million in hotel occupancy taxes are missing.

The audit reviewed 20 hotels and was conducted between January 2022 through December of last year by the city’s Internal Audit Department and a third-party audit company.

According to the audit, the hotels accounting for the most missing occupancy taxes include:

  • Comfort Inn and Suites near the airport, which owes more than $262,000.
  • Holiday Inn by the airport, which owes more than $229,000.
  • La Quinta Inn by Wyndham El Paso Cielo Vista, which owes $133,000.
