Charleston airport among sites getting new, state-of-the-art air traffic control facilities

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — Charleston International Airport is one of eight locations selected for a brand-new air traffic control tower and/or Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) facility as part of a U.S. Department of Transportation investment topping $750 million, Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy announced Thursday.

Duffy said the funding will replace aging air traffic control facilities with modern, state-of-the-art infrastructure, calling the effort part of the administration’s push to improve the nation’s aviation system. The Federal Aviation Administration chose the replacement locations based on safety and efficiency needs across the national airspace system, noting many facilities are decades old and have faced issues such as failing HVAC systems, leaking roofs and pest problems that can interrupt service.
