City of Springfield reaches agreement with Hotel of Terror property owners

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (Edited News Release/KY3) -The City of Springfield has reached a purchase agreement for the Hotel of Terror property with building owners Sterling and Melissa Mathis.

The owners have agreed to sell the property to the City for $2 million with a contingency to delay possession until Jan. 1, 2027, city officials said Monday.

“We thank Sterling and Melissa for staying at the negotiation table with us to reach a resolution that satisfies all parties,” said Mayor Jeff Schrag. “This is the positive outcome that we have hoped for.”

The city initially approved the eminent domain process of the property, located on 334 N. Main Ave., in December 2025. The city said that it was a last resort and has been used only a limited number of times over the past two decades…
