HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — A long-planned expansion of Horry County’s landfill has been shelved with the adoption of 2026-27 budget that reallocates funding for the project.
In a quick vote on Tuesday, councilmembers gave final approval to a $1.01 billion spending plan that diverts $300,000 from the Solid Waste Authority’s 2027 budget allocated for consulting and engineering to instead fund a study exploring a new transfer station and mandatory recycling.
The authority for years has been working toward growing the Highway 90 landfill to extend its lifespan through 2051 and in December applied for a federal U.S. Army Corps of Engineers permit that would allow 120 acres of wetlands to be filled in for that purpose…
