ATF warns straw gun purchases can lead to 15 years in prison

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – The Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives is warning that straw purchases are helping put guns in the wrong hands.

A straw purchase happens when someone buys a firearm for another person who is not legally allowed to own one.

The ATF’s assistant special agent in charge, Shawn Stallo, said the most common straw purchases involve friends, relatives and significant others. While some people knowingly buy guns for someone else who’s not allowed to own them, Stallo said many people believe they are just doing a favor…
