Ohio Township Fire Department shares vital emergency tips

HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – The Ohio Township Fire Department (OTFD) offered some tips when it comes to emergency calls.

According to OTFD, when an emergency happens, every second counts. There are several things residents can do to help firefighters, EMS personnel and law enforcement respond more safely and efficiently.

The tips are:

  • Make sure your address numbers are clearly visible from the road — day and night
  • Keep driveways clear and accessible for emergency vehicles
  • Turn on outside lights if you call 911 at night
  • Secure pets before responders arrive
  • Know your exact address and be ready to provide it to dispatchers
  • Maintain working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms
  • Create and practice a home escape plan with your family
  • Keep medical information and emergency contacts easily available
  • Unlock gates or provide gate codes when possible during emergencies
  • Move over and slow down for emergency vehicles on the roadway

Here are tip officials provide when it comes to responding to an active emergency:

  • Stay calm and follow dispatcher instructions
  • Send someone outside to guide responders if safe to do so
  • Avoid crowding emergency scenes or blocking access routes
