Two iconic World War II-era warbirds will land at the Evansville Wartime Museum and Evansville Regional Airport as part of the B-29 DOC History Restored Tour, July 30 through August 2, 2026.
DOC is one of 1,644 Boeing B-29 Superfortress bombers built in Wichita, Kansas, during World War II, and today, it is one of only two still airworthy and flying. The P-51 Gunfighter, a D-model Mustang, is equally rare, with fewer than 150 of the roughly 15,000 produced during the war still in existence.
“Hosting these two historic aircraft in Evansville carries special meaning because our city played an important role in America’s World War II production effort and today stands as a World War II Heritage City,” said Evansville Wartime Museum Administrator Meredith Marshall. “From Republic Aviation’s P-47 Thunderbolt factory to the LST Shipyard and the Evansville Ordinance Plant, Evansville helped supply the tools that supported victory overseas, and this visit is a powerful way to honor that legacy. It provides unique and up-close lessons of history that bring the legacies of the Greatest Generation alive.”…
