Churchill: Data center madness comes to Albany’s Kenwood property

At least they didn’t propose a tire incinerator or an ICE detention center.

Those might be the only ideas more likely to generate fierce opposition than a data center consuming an outrageous 180 megawatts of electricity. Yet that, more or less, is what an entity called the EKG Group is proposing for the former Kenwood Convent site on Albany’s southern edge, near the Bethlehem town line.

It’s a beautiful piece of property — 76 acres that slopes toward and overlooks the Hudson. The chapel in the former convent, destroyed by fire three years ago, was gorgeous enough to make a hardened man cry, while the surrounding land remains culturally significant for reasons I’ll address in a minute…
