Valatie child suffers dehydration while hiking Windham trail

WINDHAM, N.Y. (NEWS10)– An 11-year-old from Valatie was treated for dehydration earlier this month while hiking in Windham. According to the state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), forest rangers said the incident happened on May 10.

Officials said around 3:50 p.m. on May 10, rangers were dispatched to the Gold Mine Loop of the Escarpment Trail for reports of a lethargic child. Around 5:14 p.m. Forest Rangers Ryan Commerford and Rob Dawson, as well as Greene County Sheriff’s Deputies and members from the Windham Fire Department, reached the hikers.

According to the DEC, the child was suffering from dehydration and was unable to hike back down the mountain.

Rescuers then carried the child a half mile down to the trailhead, where they were met by EMS and the Windham Ambulance. The child was treated on scene and returned to their hiking party shortly after…
