It’s time to sign up to receive bins under new Fort Collins citywide trash contract

The citywide trash pickup contract with Republic Services won’t start until the end of September, but it’s time to make decisions about cart sizes and service.

Right now, Fort Collins households initiate their own service from one of the waste service providers that operate in the city. Under a contract approved by City Council, Republic will be the default provider for at least 40,000 households starting Sept. 30.

In mid-February, Republic will send out postcards to all residents affected, asking them to begin selecting the cart size they want, said Kim Palmer, Republic’s municipal relationship manager.

The deadline to make these selections is April 30, she said.

Residents who haven’t selected their carts by then will receive default sizes: Those who aren’t already Republic customers will automatically receive a 35-gallon trash cart, and Republic customers will automatically receive the trash cart size they currently use. Default cart sizes for recycling and yard waste, which is part of the service, is 95 gallons.
