Eviction double jeopardy? Fort Wayne mother wondering how it’s possible

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE)— A single mother of four turned to NewsNation local affiliate WANE after she received a second eviction notice from the Fort Wayne Housing Authority in Indiana.

The first notice came on March 4, 2026. The notice called for an emergency, three-day eviction. The FWHA said it was terminating Melissa Stock’s lease because of “destruction of property.”

Melissa said as soon as she moved into her unit in Brookmill Courts, she noticed there was a lot of water damage. She told 15 Finds Out that there was water damage in multiple places in the unit. But her main concern was water under and behind her kitchen cabinets.

“I asked maintenance to replace that and I was given permission,” Stock said. “And he told me to just place [them] right outside my front door and they would be around and they would pick it up. That is what started it.”

The emergency eviction notice cited two paragraphs in Stock’s lease, saying those were the clauses that she had violated: paragraphs 12 and 16. They deal with maintenance requirements and under which circumstances the lease can be terminated by the housing authority, respectively…
