Al Carajo, a pocket-sized Mission District restaurant making some of the Bay Area’s best breakfast burritos, is going all-in on its most popular menu item with a new spin-off.
Chef-owner Javier León is opening Al Carajo Breakfast Burrito this fall at 683 Geary St., formerly Lower Nob Hill breakfast sandwich shop Bandit. The rationale for the focus on breakfast burritos is simple, León said: They’re his best-selling item. “It’s funny, when I first opened, I started without any breakfast,” he said.
Al Carajo currently offers one breakfast burrito, with airy eggs, avocado, chorizo and potatoes inside a supple flour tortilla. It “absolutely nails the form,” Chronicle restaurant critic Cesar Hernandez wrote in a list of the Bay Area’s best breakfast burritos, lauding the “textural contrast” of the tater tots, “while piquant chorizo provides the flavorful backbone to the cylindrical bundle.”…
