Look out over the San Francisco Bay on any given day, and you may see a collection of giant container ships anchored offshore.

Bay Curious listener Stephanie Rolfs has seen them countless times on her runs, and the same question always pops into her mind: “How do the cargo ships know where to park? Is there an invisible parking lot or some other system?”

The short answer is: yes, there is a parking lot, although mariners call them anchorages. The largest ship parking lot in the bay is called Anchorage 9, just south of the Bay Bridge and north of the San Mateo Bridge…
