Piedmont Triad soybean farmer discusses difficulties: ‘Pretty tough all around’

(WGHP) — For the first nearly 200 years of America’s existence, soybeans weren’t a major crop.

For the last half century, though, it’s been massive, especially in North Carolina, where it’s the number one crop grown.

“The last 50 or 60 years, … it’s come to the forefront, and it’s become a major crop in this state and the country,” said Michael McPherson, whose family has farmed land that straddles Alamance County and Orange County for more than 75 years.

There are always difficulties in farming, but McPherson says that global unrest disrupting supply chains has made it particularly difficult.

Tariffs and Oil Prices

“Times here the last couple of years have been pretty tough all around,” McPherson said. “Fertilizer prices have increased tremendously. Fuel prices have increased tremendously. Basically, all our inputs has gone way up.”…
