Greensboro residents pack workshop on backyard homes, rental units and in-law suites

GREENSBORO, N.C. — As Greensboro pushes to add 10,000 more housing units across the city, leaders say part of the solution may already sit in people’s backyards.

Dozens of people packed into a city workshop Wednesday evening to learn more about accessory dwelling units, commonly called ADUs. The smaller secondary homes are built on the same property as a primary house and can either be attached or detached. They can include in-law suites, garage apartments or standalone backyard homes.

City leaders say the units could help create more housing options while also giving homeowners flexibility for aging family members, adult children or extra rental income…
