If your mental health could use a boost, America’s happiest city may offer a few clues—and you don’t have to move there to benefit. Fremont, California, ranks No. 1 in WalletHub’s 2026 list of America’s happiest cities, with its strongest showing coming in emotional and physical well-being.
WalletHub compared 182 cities across 29 measures spanning health, finances, employment, community and environment. Fremont scored 74.09 overall and ranked first for emotional and physical well-being, suggesting happiness may have as much to do with how you live every day as where you live.

The Five Happiest Cities in America for 2026
Fremont isn’t the only place where residents appear to be thriving. WalletHub’s five highest-ranked cities span dramatically different climates and regions, suggesting there isn’t one geographic formula for happiness.
- Fremont, California — 74.09: No. 1 for emotional and physical well-being and No. 4 for community and environment.
- Bismarck, North Dakota — 73.11: No. 1 for community and environment, with residents benefiting from relatively high levels of leisure time.
- Scottsdale, Arizona — 71.36: More than 88% of adults report good or better health, while nearly 87% participate in physical activities.
- South Burlington, Vermont — 70.15: Ranked fourth for emotional and physical well-being and first among the cities studied for adequate sleep.
- Fargo, North Dakota — 69.36: Ranked fifth for community and environment and finished fifth overall.
The geographic spread may be the most interesting takeaway. Two of the top five are in North Dakota, while California, Arizona and Vermont each put one city near the top—another indication that sunshine alone doesn’t determine well-being.
