Wildfires northeast of Las Vegas at 40,000 acres, could see 40 mph gusts in coming days

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The Grapevine Fire in Lincoln County expanded by about 25% in the past 18 hours, growing to 23,188 acres, according to reports late Wednesday morning.

Two fires near Caliente are now a week old, and still keeping firefighters busy. The Grapevine Fire, 10 miles southeast of the town, is 0% contained with about 400 personnel assigned. The Kane Springs Fire 17 miles southwest of Caliente is now at 17,037 acres and 40% contained. Nearly 300 personnel are assigned to that fire.

Combined, the two fires have burned 40,225 acres about 125 miles northeast of Las Vegas.

Crews battling the Grapevine Fire are working in timber and brush on BLM land. Winds are expected to increase over the next several days. A fire weather watch has been issued for Friday and Saturday, with winds from the south at 20-30 mph and gusts of 40 mph.

The fire is showing active to extreme behavior, and it is expected to continue growing in the evening with wind-driven runs and spotting as wind blows embers ahead.
