LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A man who pleaded guilty to killing a Metro police officer in 2022 was sentenced Monday to 74 years to life in prison, the Clark County District Attorney’s Office confirmed.
Tyson Hampton, 28, pleaded guilty but mentally ill in May in the shooting death of Officer Truong Thai. A judge ruled on Oct. 3, 2025, that Hampton was competent to stand trial.
Thai, a 23-year veteran of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, was responding to a domestic disturbance involving Hampton on Oct. 13, 2022, when Hampton shot him near Flamingo Road and University Center Drive, police said.

Thai was 4 years old when his family immigrated to the United States from Vietnam. “He always admired watching television about police and he dreamed to be a police since he was young,” his father, Quang Thai, told 8 News Now.
The danger of their son being killed in the line of duty was real for Thai’s family. They said whenever his late mother would hear of shots fired in Las Vegas, she immediately was afraid for her son.
In January 2024, Clark County District Court Judge Christy Craig first determined Hampton was incompetent to stand trial, based on doctors’ evaluations, sending him to a state facility…
