Misuse of public park bathrooms cause closures

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Public park bathrooms close down for repairs, as misuse and vandalism continues.

The DPR revealed one comfort station in Waikiki is closed due to clogged plumbing lines.

“In the past people have flushed clothes down the toilets, clogging the lines. This is likely the case right now,” said the DPR in a statement.

The bathrooms near Ohua Ave. are expected to reopen at the beginning of next week, but the DPR said there are other convenient options within close proximity.

Hawaii faced multiple park vandalisms in the recent months.

Kamamalu Neighborhood Park in Downtown Honolulu and Lualualei Beach Park in Waianae both suffered intentional bathroom fires in January within a week of each other.

The bathroom at Kamamalu Neighborhood Park suffered damages to the roof and recreation rooms.

HFD estimated $65,000 to rebuild the damages in the Lualualei Beach Park restroom fire.

In July 2023, a comfort station in Waikomo Park on Kauai was temporarily closed due to a toilet that was shattered in the men’s bathroom.
