Flood watch starts overnight for Houston, Southeast Texas before Friday storms

The Houston metro area and its suburban communities throughout Southwest Texas will be under a flood watch from overnight Thursday and until shortly before dawn Saturday, the National Weather Service said.

A powerful spring cold front is expected to surge into Texas overnight Thursday into early Friday, bringing strong storms that will produce heavy rainfall and leave cooler temperatures and gusty winds in its wake, forecasters have said.

A flood watch is issued when forecasters believe weather conditions will make flooding possible within the next 24 hours. During the flood watch, from 3 a.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Saturday, rainfall amounts of at least 2 to 4 inches, with isolated amounts of several inches, are possible, according to the weather service.

The flood watch applies to Harris County, as well as Trinity, Madison, Walker, San Jacinto, Polk, Burleson, Brazos, Washington, Grimes, Montgomery, Liberty, Colorado, Austin, Waller, Wharton and Fort Bend counties.
