Community outreach program gets hundreds of students ready for school

HAZEL GREEN, Ala. (WHNT) — Hundreds of Madison County kids are ready to head back to the classroom with new clothes, backpacks, and even fresh haircuts, all free of charge.

Months of fundraising, a team of more than 300 volunteers and a partnership between Flint River Baptist Church and The Caring Link make it possible to prepare more than 500 students for their first day of school.

“We want them to feel ready,” Caring Link President Kate O’Neal said. “There is an incredible moment when you feel prepared. Suddenly, you can shift your thoughts from ‘what you need’ and ‘how do you get those things,’ to ‘who can I become’ and ‘how do I get there?’ That’s what we want for these kids from day one.”

The program organizers take into account what children will need from head to toe. Students left with a haircut, outfits, shoes and a customized hygiene kit. Backpacks were stuffed with supplies specific to the list from each child’s school…
