Proposal would remain West Street in Indianapolis
INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce is proposing a $1 billion project to transform West Street in downtown Indianapolis, a move leaders said could drive economic growth for the next half-century.
The plan involves moving sections of West Street below ground level and constructing new east-west streets, pedestrian walkways and green spaces above.
“We see this as really a huge opportunity to drive the next 50 years of growth and development in downtown Indianapolis, and by extension, across the city region and state,” said Matt Mindrum, Indy Chamber president and CEO. “It’s certainly over $1 billion dollars of investment that would be required to unlock this potential. That said, the economic impact, we believe, is multiples of that.”…
