Feds: Moving stolen VA goods will cost man $1.6M

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A Pennsylvania man will spend years in prison for trafficking diabetic test strips stolen from the Veterans Affairs medical center near Battle Creek.

Steven Anderson Jr., a 45-year-old resident of Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, was sentenced to 6.5 years in prison, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Michigan announced Wednesday in a release.

A jury in June 2023 found Anderson guilty of all 12 charges against him, according to the release. The attorney’s office says Anderson trafficked over 7,900 boxes of stolen diabetic test strips that were worth over $427,000.

Anderson was ordered to pay the full value of the test strips — $427,795 — as part of his criminal judgment, according to the release. To resolve the government’s civil claims, he also agreed to pay more than $1.2 million, the office says.

“Anderson trafficked stolen goods while pocketing thousands of dollars in ill-gotten
gain,” U.S. Attorney Mark Totten said in a statement. “Not only did Anderson steal from the government, but he diverted medical products intended for veterans who faithfully served our nation. Today’s sentence brings a measure of justice for taxpayers and those who serve the United States in uniform.”
