Calhoun County man convicted of first-degree premeditated murder in 2024 homicide

BARRY COUNTY, Mich. — A Calhoun County man was found guilty Monday of first-degree murder for the 2024 homicide of a 79-year-old man.

Brady Allen West was convicted on all counts filed against him after a trial lasting six days.

West was charged in May 2024 for the murder of 79-year-old Jimmy L. Sykes of Battle Creek.

West’s convictions and penalties are as follows:

  • Count 1- First Degree Premeditated and Felony Murder: A felony carrying a penalty of Life in prison without Parole (MCL 750.316)
  • Count 2- Conspiracy to Commit First Degree Premeditated Murder: A Felony carrying a penalty of Life in prison without parole (750.157a) (750.316)
