World Cup crowds prompt Missouri restaurants to add automatic tips

Some Kansas City restaurants will implement automatic gratuity charges this summer as visitors from all over the world come to attend the city’s World Cup matches.

More than 650,000 fans are expected to come to Kansas City for the global event, making it the largest the city has ever hosted.

Why are Missouri restaurants adding automatic gratuity?

But, some foreign guests may be unfamiliar with tipping culture in the U.S., the Missouri Restaurant Association said. It recommends businesses include a 20% automatic tip throughout the event.

“Of all the countries coming here, some of them will know about (tipping), and some of them don’t know anything about it,” Mike Burris, executive director of the MRA, told The Beacon. “If I [were] a server, I wouldn’t be too happy if I took care of somebody for 90 minutes and they didn’t tip just because they didn’t know any better.”…
