U.S. Dept. of Education delivers final ultimatum to Kansas school districts over alleged Title IX violations

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Federal education officials are taking action against four Kansas school districts for their alleged violations of Title IX.

The U.S. Department of Education’s (ED) Office for Civil Rights (OCR) issued “letters of impending enforcement action” to three Kansas school districts on June 11: Olathe Public Schools, Shawnee Mission School District and Topeka Public Schools. The ED also sent a “letter of impasse” to Kansas City, Kansas Public School District.

The ED said in a press release that it sent the letters to the four Kansas school districts for their alleged failure to comply with Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. The department previously announced in April this year that it found the school districts were violating Title IX by allowing male students to use facilities designated for female students, such as locker rooms and restrooms. The OCR also reportedly found that some of the school districts allowed male students to participate in female athletic programs based on their “gender identity.”

The ED said that, despite the issuance of the OCR’s proposed resolution agreements that could potentially fix the alleged Title IX violations, the school districts have reportedly taken no action to protect women and girls.
