Man killed in Sugar Creek just days after securing apartment remembered at balloon release

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Family and community members gathered Friday morning to release balloons in memory of Joel Williams, a 20-year-old Kansas City man who was killed just two days after securing his first apartment.

Williams, who went by “Jojo,” had been working at a United Market location in Kansas City while also experiencing homelessness. His uncle, Joseph Straws, said Williams was working toward stability at the time of his death.

“I remember the first job, I took him to his McDonald’s and I would take him there every day,” Straws said. “He was ready to go every day. He was always excited about it.”…
