Residents at Knoxville apartment wait months for AC, accessibility fixes

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Two renters at a Knoxville apartment complex were in need of help. One wanted an air conditioner, the other a walk-in shower.

Brenda Jewell has been in a wheelchair since her right leg was amputated last year. She has little mobility. She lives at the Residences at Eastport, a Knoxville complex for seniors ages 62 and older. Since her amputation, bathing has been a challenge.

“I cannot take a bath. I can put my good leg over there, but then you are afraid you are going to slip in the tub. And those bars are too far away for me to hold onto. It’s not worth me, my life, to take a chance on getting into that bathtub. Because if I slip, I’m going to hit my head, and it’s not worth it,” said Jewell.
