In the years after the COVID pandemic, the unhoused crisis in Knoxville has reached unprecedented heights. According to the annual Point-in-Time (PIT) report on homelessness in the Knoxville-Knox County area, the crisis has worsened since the start of the decade largely because the average cost of rent has increased by 62%. However, average wages have increased by only 15%.
The situation has worsened in recent years due to sharp decreases in federal funding and increasingly large numbers of people in need of housing services due to unmanageable housing costs. Given these recent trends, it is clear that the unhoused crisis requires solutions, now more than ever.
Many nonprofits, community organizations and local government organizations are working to alleviate this crisis. One currently thriving organization is ReLAUNCH.
