Knoxville Weather: Heavy rain leads to flooding concerns Sunday

Widespread rain on Sunday will lead to a low flash flood threat. Drier fall-like weather will return as we begin the workweek.

  • Tonight: Scattered showers with some locally heavy rainfall possible (40%). Low: 67°.
  • Sunday: Occasional showers (70%) with locally heavy rainfall possible for some. High: 76°.
  • Sunday night: Spotty showers early with lingering clouds (30%). Low: 61°.
  • Monday: Decreasing clouds with a cool breeze. High: 78°.

Unusually mild and damp conditions are expected Saturday night. Temperatures will drop into the middle to upper 60s with generally overcast skies and high humidity. A few spotty to scattered downpours are possible; however, most of us should stay dry, at least early in the night. Some areas of fog are expected as well with all the excess moisture.

The chances (and coverage) for rainfall will increase for many around daybreak Sunday with the potential for locally heavy rainfall once again; that could lead to isolated flash flooding.

Sunday’s rain chances and coverage looks to be the highest of the weekend, especially for areas along and south of I-40. If the main heavy rain axis lines up over where we saw the heavier rain on Saturday, the flood potential would be heightened even more. The best chance for rain looks to be Sunday morning and early afternoon…
